Medical Student Anesthesia Research Fellowship

FAER MSARF Symposium

As part of the FAER Medical Student Anesthesia Research Fellowship, FAER offers students the opportunity to attend the American Society of Anesthesiologists Annual Meeting in October, where they participate in the FAER MSARF Symposium.

The FAER MSARF Symposium features poster and oral presentations. Prior to the Symposium, MSARF participants prepare written abstracts summarizing their experiences at their host institutions. All students also prepare posters which they present during the first 90 minutes of the Symposium. In the second 90 minutes of the Symposium, selected students give oral presentations. The MSARF Program Committee selects students for oral presentations based on evaluations of submitted abstracts.

The FAER MSARF Symposium is moderated by Donn Dennis, MD, FAHA. Dr. Dennis is a FAER Director; the Joachim S. Gravenstein, MD, Professor of Anesthesiology and Director of Nanomedicine at the University of Florida College of Medicine; and Vice President of Pharmacology at ARYx Therapeutics, Inc. in Fremont, California. Dr. Dennis' research interests focus on translating fundamental science findings in the areas of cardiovascular biology and nanotechnology into medically useful, commercially viable products (e.g., new chemical entities, nano-based drug delivery systems and sensors).

FAER offers a $1,000 grant to each student's MSARF host department to defray the costs for the medical student to attend the ASA Annual Meeting and the FAER MSARF Symposium. Medical students submit expenses to the host department for reimbursement.

As part of the FAER MSARF Symposium program, students are also required to attend the following research-related activities during the ASA Annual Meeting:

  • Celebration of Research Luncheon
  • FAER Honorary Research Lecture
  • FAER Panel

The ASA 2008 Annual Meeting will be October 18-22 in Orlando, Florida. Students who plan to attend the ASA Annual Meeting and the FAER MSARF Symposium must register:
