FAER Academy of Research Mentors in Anesthesiology Workshop: “The Pathway to Federal Funding for New Investigators” This year’s workshop will be moderated by Roderic G. Eckenhoff, M.D., Vice-Chair for Research in the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia and William L. Young, M.D., Director of the University of California, San Francisco Center for Cerebrovascular Research.  Approaches for new investigators to acquire federal funding for their training and research will be presented and discussed by both physician scientists and NIH program personnel.  Examples of successful basic, translational and clinical science will also be presented by program officers from NINDS and NIGMS.  Finally, a representative from the Center for Scientific Review (CSR) will discuss the review and treatment of new investigator proposals.

Eleventh FAER Honorary Research Lecturer: Michael J. Joyner, M.D., the Frank R. and Shari Caywood Professor of Anesthesiology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, will speak on “Putting the Gene-ie Back in the Bottle: Is the Relevance of ‘Omics’ Limited in Biomedical Research?” (Required)

3-5 PM

FAER Panel: “The Role of Research in Improving Patient Outcomes in a Cost-effectiveness Environment” This year’s panel will be moderated by Ronald G. Pearl, M.D., Ph.D., Professor and Chair of Anesthesia at Stanford University in Stanford, California.  Panelists will include Hannah Wunsch, M.D.; Alex Macario, M.D., M.B.A.; Kevin Tremper, M.D., Ph.D.; and Carolyn Clancy, M.D.  Experts in cost-effectiveness or patient outcomes research, panelists will discuss the importance of this research, its challenges and the unique opportunities for such research in the era of healthcare reform.
