FAER's Grant Review Process

The Foundation's effectiveness is absolutely dependent upon the work of two committees for rigorous review of grant proposals and provision of constructive feedback and critique to each applicant. The members represent a balance between basic science and clinical investigators.

ASA Committee on Research

This committee reviews applications for the Mentored Research Training Grants and Research Fellowships Grants.

This committee reviews applications for Research Education Grants

Format

  • Application guidelines and review process modeled after National Institutes of Health (NIH)
  • Strict adherence to the guidelines is mandated
    • ensures fairness to all applicants
    • teaches applicants the disciplined and meticulous process of obtaining competitive funding

Process

  • FAER office ensures grant applications are complete
  • Proposals sent to Chairs of the review committees
  • Two principal reviewers assigned to each proposal
  • Each principal reviewer assigns a score from 1.0 (most favorable) to 5.0 (least favorable)
  • Full committee meets
  • Principal reviewers present each application
  • Each application is classified as to whether or not it meets the standards for funding
  • Amended score is assigned to fundable applications
  • Committee compiles rank order of applications
  • Chairs of review committees present recommendations for funding to FAER Board of Directors
  • FAER Directors determine number of applications that can be funded considering available monies

Outcomes

  • All applicants receive detailed critiques to help improve proposal to enhance success with future grant applications
