Three types of support are available from FAER. Applications are reviewed by the ASA Committee on Research or the FAER Education Committee depending on the grant type. These groups function as a study section using NIH criteria and methods. Grants are awarded by the FAER Board based on the scores and the amount of funds available. Written critiques are shared with applicants. FAER has two application deadlines each year; February 15 and August 15.
Grant Options
Mentored Research Training Grant (MRTG)
A Mentored Research Training Grant (MRTG) is a two-year grant to be awarded competitively to individuals who have completed their clinical anesthesia training and have academic appointments at the instructor or assistant professor level, no more than 10 years after completion of residency or fellowship. Awarded for either clinical research or basic science research, the first year is funded at $75,000 and the second at $100,000. The recipient must be guaranteed 75% protected non-clinical time for research, which may include research related to but not specifically for the project. The research mentor must have a minimum of 40% non-clinical academic time devoted to research activities during the two year duration of the grant. A yearly award of $20,000 is available for use by the research mentor. A detailed mentoring plan is part of the application for an MRTG. A report from the research mentor describing the trainee’s research development and a report from the trainee describing the scientific progress are required after the first year. A final report jointly prepared by the award recipient and research mentor should describe the scientific and training achievements of the trainee and be submitted within one month of the conclusion of the 2-year period. Both the increase in award for the second year and the continuation of the grant in year two will be dependent on a favorable evaluation of the interim report by the FAER Board.

Research Fellowship Grant (RFG)
A Research Fellowship Grant (RFG) provides a one-year grant to individuals currently participating in an ACGME approved anesthesiology training program. This fellowship must be consistent with the ABA templates for protected research time or in conjunction with a clinical fellowship sponsored by an ACGME approved anesthesiology training program. When in conjunction with residency training, the one year of research under this grant does not have to directly follow the research experience in the CBY-CA3 years, but there must be a total of at least 18 months of research experience. When in conjunction with a clinical fellowship, the 12 months of research will generally follow the 12 months of clinical fellowship experience. A research mentor must be identified and provide written commitment to strong direct involvement in all research activity. Upon completion of research training, a report jointly produced by the fellow and research mentor must be submitted to the FAER Board. FAER will provide $75,000 of support for the twelve months of research to the institution on behalf of the recipient. During the 12-month fellowship period the recipient will be required to spend a minimum of 75% of their time in research related to but not specifically on the project. The remaining 25% may be spent in clinical anesthesia practice. This clinical activity must not exceed a single 10-hour daytime commitment per week. No night, weekend or holiday on-call activity is allowed. The extent of salary supplementation should be stipulated.

Research Education Grant (REG)
A Research in Education Grant (REG) is a two-year grant to be awarded competitively to individuals who have completed their clinical anesthesia training and have academic appointments. Applications from both junior and senior faculty are accepted. While a formal mentor is required only for junior faculty (instructor and assistant professor), a mentor with expertise in education is encouraged for all applicants. Both years are funded at $50,000 per year and application for an additional two years will be accepted. The recipient must be guaranteed a minimum of 40% protected non-clinical time for research related to this education project. An interim report from the award recipient describing the progress is required after the first year. The final report should describe the achievements and be submitted within one month of the conclusion of the two-year period. The continuation of the grant for year two will be dependent on a favorable evaluation of the interim report by the FAER Board. Application may be made for a second two-year award, and such applications will be reviewed competitively with other applications.
