The Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research offers several types of grants.
- Mentored Research Training Grant – Basic Science (MRTG-BS)
- Mentored Research Training Grant – Clinical and Translational Science (MRTG-CT)
- Research Fellowship Grant (RFG)
- Research in Education Grant (REG)
Mentored Research Training Grant - Basic Science (MRTG-BS)
The two-year Mentored Research Training Grant (MRTG-BS) provides funding for basic science research. The first year is funded up to $75,000, and the second year is funded up to $100,000. Individuals who hold a faculty appointment in anesthesiology (instructor, assistant or associate professor, for example) and are, in general, within 10 years of having completed an anesthesiology residency or fellowship program are eligible to apply.
Applicants must be guaranteed 75% protected non-clinical time for research, which may include research related to but not specifically for the project being funded. The research mentor must have a minimum of 40% non-clinical academic time devoted to research activities during the two-year duration of the grant. Together, the applicant and the mentor must provide a detailed mentoring and career development plan as a part of the MRTG-BS application.
Mentored Research Training Grant - Clinical and Translational Science (MRTG-CT)
The two-year Mentored Research Training Grant (MRTG-CT) provides funding for basic science research.

Together, the applicant and the mentor must provide a detailed mentoring and career development plan as a part of the MRTG-CT application.
Research Fellowship Grant (RFG)
A Research Fellowship Grant (RFG) provides one year of funding up to $75,000 to individuals in ACGME-approved anesthesiology residency programs.
Before beginning FAER-sponsored research, recipients must have completed at least 6 months of research as a part of their residency program (CBY – CA3 years). This work should be consistent with ABA templates for research (see page 12 of the 2011 ABA Booklet of Information at theaba.org/home/publications). The 12 months of FAER-sponsored research should follow the 6 months of research during residency, for a total of 18 months of research experience in the CA1 - CA4 years). Alternatively, the 12 months of FAER-sponsored research may directly precede or follow a one-year clinical fellowship sponsored by an ACGME-approved residency program.
Please do not hesitate to contact the FAER office to discuss your proposed research experience timeline.
Applicants must identify their research mentor, who is required to provide written commitment to strong, direct involvement in all research activity. During the 12 months of FAER-sponsored research, recipients must spend a minimum of 80% of their time in research related to but not specifically on the FAER-funded project.
Research Education Grant (REG)
The two-year Research in Education Grant (REG) provides funding to individuals who have completed their clinical anesthesia training and have academic faculty appointments. Each of the two years is funded up to $50,000. The REG is intended to stimulate career development for anesthesiologists interested in researching the concepts, methods and techniques of education in anesthesiology in all its forms. This includes novel approaches to educating medical students, residents, fellows and practicing physicians.
Junior and senior faculty members may apply. Applicants must identify a mentor with expertise in education. Applicants must be guaranteed a minimum of 40% protected non-clinical time for research related to this education project. Applications may be submitted for a second two-year award, which will be reviewed competitively with other applications.
