- Two studies on cerebral function monitoring are being funded by the American Society of Anesthesiologists.
FAER received seven CFM funding applications. They were reviewed by the ASA Committee on Research and the FAER Board recommended approval of two studies. The ASA has provided $500,000 to FAER for first-year funding of the two studies. The investigators will submit mid-year progress reports, which will be presented to ASA in August 2008.
One applicant receiving funding is Michael S. Avidan, MBBCh, FCA, of the Washington University School of Medicine for a study entitled “BAG Recall: BIS or Anesthesia Gas to Reduce Explicit Recall.” Co-investigators are Michael F. O’Connor and David Glick, MD, both of the University of Chicago.
The other applicant receiving approval is George A. Mashour, MD, PhD, of the University of Michigan Medical School for a project entitled “A Prospective, Randomized, Controlled Trial Comparing Bispectral Index Monitoring to Electronic Alerts for Prevention of Awareness During Anesthesia in the General Population.” Mashour’s co-investigators are Satwant K. Samra, MD, Christoper Turner, MD, and Sachin Kheterpal, MD, MBA, all of the University of Michigan Medical School. - Grant Highlights from the last FAER Board of Directors Meeting.
- Mentored Research Training Grant
FAER will accept applications from individuals up to 10 years post-residency, extending the deadline from its previous five years. - Research time required for an MRTG was reduced from 80% to 75% time. Also, the mentor stipend was adjusted from $40,000 to $20,000 annually.
- Research Fellowship Grant prerequisite becomes more flexible, too. The first six months of research training no longer needs to immediately precede the research year. This creates more flexibility for applicants.

Since 1986, the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER) has been a nonprofit charitable and educational organization fulfilling a mission to promote the generation of new knowledge in anesthesiology that advances patient care and foster development of anesthesiologists dedicated to research and education in perioperative, critical care and pain medicine.
Our Annual Report is filled with individuals, organizations and groups who see the value in supporting the Foundation. If your name is already listed, we thank you. If not, we thank you for taking the time to learn more about us, and we encourage you to help us make a difference in the lives of millions of patients under the care of anesthesiologists each year. Our Donations page outlines a few of the ways to make lasting legacy in anesthesiology.
